A simply stunning American easel by F Weber of Philadelphia and St Louis. All parts are present and correct and it works beautifully.
F. Weber & Company, Inc. was an American manufacturer and supplier of artists' materials established in 1853 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The F. Weber Company, Inc. is the oldest and one of the largest manufacturers of art materials in the United States. This easel’s label does not include ‘Inc’ and so dates it to pre-1919.
This piece is extremely rare and it is absolutely substantial and solid. The painting on it is over a metre in width and the mannequin is life size to give a sense of scale.
It is raised on its original castors. Present at the rear are its original cast iron handles to adjust the angle from flat for carriage to 90• upright.
The crank ratchet mechanism is ingenious (a unique spiral brass and cast iron peg mounting crank) and the easel can be raised and lower within a significant range.
It bears some original labels from old first class train journeys by British Rail and it’s just fascinating to think of its life; perhaps the labels are part of the story of how this easel came to be an American living in England!
It is a stunning piece, with the perfect patina. It will display that treasured piece of art wonderfully, or dare we say, even the largest of flat screen TVs.
