This wonderful, very large old vertebrae from a horse has been hand painted to depict the priest John Wesley, being an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of the revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism (the few of these types of pieces which have been documented state they were made to poke fun at his new evangelical religion of the period).
This example is huge! It has a superb patina and rather than the simply painted versions you occasionally see this one has a carved mouth and nose. Just charming!
This outstanding piece of unsigned folk art is a very rare thing indeed and is a must for any Wunderkammer. We absolutely love it!
Metal skull is life size for scale.
