A folk art bone John Wesley

Such a wonderfully terrifying piece! This superb, very large old vertebrae from a horse has been hand painted and carved to depict the priest John Wesley, being an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of the revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism (the few of these types of pieces which have been documented state they were made to poke fun at his new evangelical religion of the period).

This example is huge! It has a superb patina and rather than the simply painted versions you occasionally see this one has a carved face making him wonderfully macabre!

This outstanding piece of unsigned folk art is a very rare thing indeed and is a must for any wunderkammer. We absolutely love it! One of two purchased from the same collection.
