A wood and iron Japanese Funa Tansu sea chest

An exceptional, rare piece, this beautiful Japanese funa tansu or sea chest could no doubt tell a tale or two about what it’s held, seen and where it’s been!

With hand beautiful, elaborate hand forged ironwork and the patina of ages, this chest would have been carried on voyages from client to client. It is not known if the ‘N & Sons 1880’ stamp relates to a client, a merchant voyage or a maker, though we believe the piece predates 1880 quite significantly. A little research may illuminate the life of this stunning piece.

A thing to treasure.
