A wooden Makonde helmet mask ~D

A superb example of a Makonde helmet mask. Hand carved and pigmented. The eyes are painted on the inside of the upper lids so the mask appears to blink as moved/tilted back and forth.

This piece was purchased between the 1940s and the 1960s: we can be sure of this as it came from a private collection amassed by a wealthy Kenyan family within this period. It will predate this in terms of its age as the family predominantly collected antique pieces.

A fascinating piece for any collection. One of several purchased from the same collection and listed separately.

Stand not included.
