A late Victorian pedestal desk by Maple & Co

A truly gorgeous late Victorian pedestal desk by excellent maker Maple & Co with a green leather top with tooled gilt design.

This superb piece is raised on castors. All quality dovetailed. Brass swan drop handles. It bears its original label plaque to the top drawer.

Splits into three pieces so perfect for moving into a tighter spot or where access is restricted.

Figured back so this piece will be equally at home in the middle of a room as against a wall. Displays well from all sides/the rear.

It bears a small green label for the Batchelar & Son Depository. They were excellent vendors of period furniture.

A very useable, stylish piece that will last a lifetime. These fetch upwards of £1000-1500 so this is your opportunity to grab a bargain.

Maple and Co was one the largest and most successful British furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the Late 19th Century, Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were well known for fine quality, craftsmanship and were specialists in copying old designs but bringing them up to date to the more modern trends. They produced many quality pieces of antique furniture in designs such as Hepplewhite and Chippendale but also were well known for their quality Arts & Crafts Furniture.

Maple & Co was first established by John Maple, a shopkeeper in Surrey, who later opened a furniture shop in Tottenham Court Road. It was his son, John Maple, who pushed Maples & Co to be such a huge success. With his skills in business, by the 1880s they were the largest furniture store in the world as they exported their fine antique furniture to many different countries and were well known throughout the interiors world. During the late 19th and early 20th Century they had showrooms and workshops in London, Paris and Buenos Aires.

Condition: Where there are specific points to note we will detail these as far as possible but please be aware that all our items have wear commensurate with age and are as seen in the photographs. If you require any specific information please do not hesitate to get in contact. As seen in the images, but not limited to: wear and marks to the leather top and knocks/marks to the wood commensurate with age. Structurally sound. We think the very old filled holes to the drawer fronts as seen perhaps bore drawer plaque labels? These would have been later additions by an owner. No key.
