An absolutely fantastic, truly exceptional and very well cast stone statue of Mr Punch.
Mr Punch has his roots back in the 16th century Italian commedia dell’arte and is a British stalwart being extremely popular in the Victorian and Edwardian era and beyond, right up to this day.
The detailing is just superb on this statue and we cannot find a single similar example, so there is every chance this is a one-off sculpture.
It is signed back left by the sculptor and is dated 1905. We have enhanced the final image to better show this as it is hard to decipher- we cannot make out the name (the statue is also partially painted in remaining old lead paint helping to date it to pre-1970s).
The peeling paint has taken on an almost rusty patina. We absolutely love this look.
Every detail is excellent from his frilled seat, hunchback, facial expression, to his hands and fingernails, his strands of hair, plaited rope, embroidered cuffs and buckle shoes. Wonderful!
Mr Punch is a very substantial piece of really good proportions. He is very heavy indeed! He comes on a charming mossy plinth giving him added status.
A truly unique piece for a special setting. We hope we get to enjoy him for a while.
