A superb painting by Mikhail Sevastyanovich Prokopyuk, b.1929. Entitied ‘War’ by the artist, and dating to 1974.
A wonderful, compelling, narrative painting which looks to have been scaled up for a later, larger work.
Inscribed verso:
Mikhail Sevastyanovich Prokopyuk (b.1926), ‘The Russian Mother’. Oil sketch of a mother standing over the body of her dead soldier son. A soldier comrade kneels in the background, clutching his PPSh-41 machine gun.
Also signed and dated 1974, and noting the purchase from the artist’s estate in 1989.
An incredibly interesting and powerful piece.
