A bronze aquamanile in the form of a lion

We believe this piece to be a truly wonderful, very old bronze lion form aquamanile. These are so rare to find, this really is a special piece.

An aquamanile was a jug used both in the home and at church to wash hands (aqua = water manus= hand). They were made from precious metals, base metals or ceramics. From the 12th century onwards aquamaniles depicting lions, horses, dragons and other beasts were very popular.

We are not sure when this piece dates to, but it’s simple form, naive style and materials suggests an early example. The plinth is possibly a later addition. Some polychrome paint remains to the base.

A heavy piece and exceptionally rare piece.
