Likely an English folk art piece, this superbly naive sphinx is late 18th, early 19th century. 

With remnants of polychrome paint over gesso, the patina on this piece is outstanding.

Captivatingly rendered, this is an exceptionally rare, mystical and mythical, one-off masterpiece.
