A rare pair of silvered cow bone vases

We know very little about these pieces so please read on and satisfy yourself.

Offered here are a stunning pair of extremely unusual and rare vessels which are either cow bone (bovidae), or possibly horse bone (equus). Likely these are cut down femurs or tibias.

The exact age is unknown but they have been looked at by an auction house and are believed to be late Victorian.

From the assessment we had made of these, we believe they have either been dipped in metal or weighted. They are extremely heavy and deceptively so. Beneath the grey metal which may be silver, lead, pewter- we’re not sure- there is copper suggesting that they may have been plated.

The exposed interior has been heat tested with a hot pin in an inconspicuous area, and is not a resin or plastic cast. It is therefore believed to be real bone. Each vessel is unique. The pieces are not identical but are two different bones.

No one who we have shown them to has ever laid eyes on something like this, and we certainly haven’t, so this is a rare opportunity. They may well have been artisan/home produced as one-offs. Perhaps to commemorate a favourite horse or prizewinning cow.
