A wooden Makonde helmet mask ~C

A superb example of a Makonde helmet mask. Hand carved and pigmented. It is possible that this piece once had (human) hair. It is a very large example.

This piece was purchased between the 1940s and the 1960s: we can be sure of this as it came from a private collection amassed by a wealthy Kenyan family within this period. It will predate this in terms of its age as the family predominantly collected antique pieces.

A fascinating piece for any collection. One of several purchased from the same collection and listed separately.
