An early 20th century taxidermy tortoise snuff box

A wonderful, very unusual taxidermy tortoise casket.

These were generally intended for use as snuff mulls, though they make great caskets for anything.

This piece is so cleverly made, the body being a real tortoise shell with the head and legs made of brass.

The storage cavity is edged in plaited brass and is fully lined in brass too. It’s so characterful! 

A fascinating and curious piece.
