A large glass apothecary carboy on mahogany stand - 71cm

An exceptional, huge glass carboy. Hand blown glass with a stunning faceted stopper, standing on a beautifully turned mahogany base with recessed castors (this would have sat on a track of some sort).

We understand that carboys filled with coloured liquid may once have been used to inform the population (many of whom couldn’t read) about any viruses currently in circulation in the area and how virulent they were. They were certainly used to distinguish pharmacies from other shops and came into use around 1550-1600.

It’s so rare to get a piece of this size, let alone without damage and on its display stand. You will not find better. We hope that this piece stays with us for some time!

One of several different apothecary pieces we currently have on offer.

Condition: Where there are specific points to note we will detail these as far as possible but please be aware that all our items have wear commensurate with age and are as seen in the photographs. If you require any specific information please do not hesitate to get in contact. As seen in the images, but not limited to: inclusions, scratches etc but no chips or breaks. The stopper does remove. The coloured liquid within may well have clouded the vessel so it will be best displayed with liquid in. Some tiny paint splash residue to the glass but largely removed.
